M6 to be continued as PPP

Further 79 kilometres of motorway in Hungary to be constructed as PPP

The 54 km long section of Motorway M6 between Érdi-tető and Dunaújváros was opened in 2006 and the 8 km long section linking M0 and Érdi-tető is under construction. These two sections form Phase I. of the M6/M60 project.

According to existing designs the asphalt strip will reach Pécs City in 2010 before the date of the elections. The underlying reason for this objective is that this county seat will act as the European Cultural Capital in 2010.

Considering the status of preconstruction works this project will be completed in two subsequent phases.  Expected to be issued this year, Phase II. would consist of a 49 km long section between Szekszárd and Bóly (M6), for which the permits are available and a 30 km long link from Bóly to Pécs (M60). Phase III. will include the section between Dunaújváros and Szekszárd which is currently in the approval process.

The Ministry of Economy and Transport intends to issue the two sections of Phase II. through a procurement process as a public-private partnership (PPP) project. The preparations of the project towards this end are underway.

The Designs for Approval of the M6 section between 167+000 km and 173+000 km include 4 tunnels and 3 viaduct bridges presenting a considerable challenge already in the period of alignment definition and design and a still greater challenge to be faced in the implementation phase.
